New Orleans, LA, July 26, 2000 - adidas - Salomon AG, the world's second-largest sporting goods manufacturer, and SensAble Technologies are collaborating to perfect the use of the FreeForm™ modeling system in footwear design and manufacturing.

The adidas-Salomon Concept Realization and Engineering group is proactively helping adidas reduce the time and cost of bringing products to market. FreeForm modeling is a cutting-edge tool that allows them to turn initial 2D designs into 3D models in a more timely manner - without sacrificing "the look" of its footwear products. Harnessing the sense of touch for modeling confers dramatic ease-of-use advantages to the FreeForm system. As a result, model-makers can productively make the transition to adidas-Salomon's new digital processes in much less time. The system has been used on a variety of production projects in Germany and the US, and adidas user feedback has already begun to impact FreeForm product development.

"We are enthusiastic to be working with FreeForm," said Gary Pitman, Head of Concept Realization and Engineering for adidas-Salomon. "It is becoming an important element in our new, more streamlined development process."

The FreeForm modeling system allows designers and sculptors to create 3D models using their sense of touch. It blends the intuitiveness and expressiveness of physical modeling with the power and productivity of digital modeling. Customers from industries as disparate as footwear, toys, sporting goods, ceramics, digital content creation, and conceptual design are using the FreeForm system to tackle a variety of modeling challenges. That results in big improvements in productivity and time-to-market, without sacrificing high aesthetic standards.

"adidas is a great customer and partner for us," commented Tom Ellery, SensAble's Executive Vice President for Sales & Marketing. "They're very focused on improving the way they do things while maintaining high design quality, and they readily embrace new tools that help them achieve their goals."
